Needlepoint Canvas & Stitch-Count Planner

Mesh times inches is stitches, and the margin is for blocking

Finishing plan

Needlepoint canvas is sized by mesh, the number of holes per inch, so stitch count is the design size times the mesh. Leave generous unworked canvas around the design for blocking and finishing, choose a thread that covers the canvas at that mesh, and estimate thread by stitching a measured test patch.

Coverage depends on the stitch, the thread and your tension. Stitch a small test patch and hold it to the light to see whether canvas shows through before committing to a thread.

At least 2 in of unworked canvas on every side is a common minimum; many finishers prefer 3 in. Ask your finisher before cutting.

The 1.5 yd is a placeholder; measure your own patch. Basketweave distorts the canvas less than continental and generally uses a little more thread.

Frames and stands

Stretcher bars keep the canvas square, and a floor stand with a magnifier lamp makes long sessions on 18 mesh comfortable.
