Knitting Project Journal & Yarn Substitution

Two yarns labeled worsted can behave very differently. A substitute has to match the pattern gauge, supply enough total yardage, and have a fiber that drapes, stretches and recovers the way the design expects. Compare the numbers below, swatch the substitute, and record the project so the next one starts from what worked.

Wraps per inch (WPI)

Wrap the yarn around a ruler or WPI tool side by side, without stretching or gaps, and count wraps in one inch. Use it to classify a yarn with no label.

Sources vary widely because wrapping tension varies. Wrap a labeled yarn of known weight the same way for a reliable comparison, and always confirm with a swatch.

Yardage substitution

Total yards needed equals pattern skeins times pattern yards per skein. Substitute skeins equal that total divided by the substitute's yards per skein, rounded up.

Plus one spare skein from the same dye lot?

Compare yards per 100 g, not just the weight category. A big difference in yards per 100 g at the same gauge usually means a different fabric weight and drape.
