Mattress Size Chart for Quilters: Dimensions, Depth and Quilt Sizes
US mattress sizes are 38 x 75 inches for a twin, 53 x 75 for a full, 60 x 80 for a queen, 76 x 80 for a king and 72 x 84 for a California king. Most adult mattresses are 8 to 14 inches deep, which decides how much drop a quilt needs.
Every bed quilt starts with the mattress. Width and length set the top of the quilt, and depth sets how much of the drop disappears down the sides before the quilt starts to hang.

How much drop does each bed style need?
| Style | Drop | Pillow tuck | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverlet | 12 to 15 in | none | Covers the mattress top and sides and just overlaps a bed skirt. Pillows sit on top. Most modern quilt charts use this style. |
| Comforter / Duvet style | 10 to 15 in | none | Similar drop to a coverlet, usually loftier. Shows the bed skirt or box spring below. |
| Bedspread | 20 to 24 in | 10 to 15 in | Reaches to or near the floor and tucks over the pillows. The drop equals the height from mattress top to floor, so measure your bed. |
What size quilt covers a deep mattress?
For the deepest typical mattress of each size with 3 inches of overhang past the sides, you need roughly these sizes:
| Mattress | Depth used | Quilt size (in) |

| Toddler | 6 in | 46 x 61 |

Frequently asked questions
What size is a queen mattress?
A standard US queen mattress is 60 x 80 inches (152 x 203 cm), usually 8 to 14 inches deep. Most popular US size. A coverlet-style quilt for it is about 90 x 95 inches.
What is the difference between a king and a California king?
4 in narrower and 4 in longer than king. A king is 76 x 80 inches and a California king is 72 x 84 inches. Quilts for a California king need less width and more length than a king quilt, so check which bed you are sewing for before cutting.
How does mattress depth affect quilt size?
The drop has to cover the mattress sides before it shows any overhang. A 14 inch pillow-top eats almost all of a 15 inch drop, while an 8 inch mattress leaves 7 inches of overhang. Measure depth and add the overhang you like, or use the quilt size calculator to do it for you.
What size is a twin XL mattress?
A twin XL mattress is 38 x 80 inches, the same width as a twin but 5 inches longer. It is common in college dorms. A twin XL quilt is usually about 68 x 95 inches, so a standard twin quilt will be a little short on a twin XL bed.
What size is a crib mattress?
Full-size crib. CPSC: at least 27 1/4 x 51 5/8 in, no thicker than 6 in. Better Sleep Council lists 27 x 52. Crib quilts are decorative: keep quilts, blankets and other soft bedding out of an infant sleep space, following safe-sleep guidance.
