How is cross stitch floss usage calculated?
The calculator starts from the published range of 960 to 1,800 full crosses per skein on 14 count with 2 strands. Stitch area scales with the square of the stitch size, so 18 count stitches use about (14 / 18) squared, or 60 percent, as much floss each. Fewer strands stretch a skein further in proportion. Skeins are then the stitch count divided by stitches per skein, rounded up.
