Shell Stitch: How to Do It Step by Step

Shell Stitch is a crochet stitch that makes scalloped fans; lacy and drapey. Makers reach for it for blanket borders, shawls, baby blankets. It is rated intermediate here, so it helps to be comfortable with the basic stitches first and to practice on a swatch before a project.

1. Start with a row of stitches or a chain that fits the repeat (often a multiple of 6 plus 1). 2. Skip 2 stitches. 3. Work 5 dc in the next stitch to form one shell. 4. Skip 2 stitches and sc in the next stitch. 5. Repeat across. On the next row, work shells into the sc and sc into the center dc of each shell. Work slowly for the first few repeats, keep your tension even, and check the result against the steps before continuing across a whole row or motif.
